Lake Natron Safari Experience

What does Lake Natron have to offer?

When you think of Tanzania, you think of wildlife and parks such as Serengeti and the Ngorongoro crater. But if you look a little further, there is much more, such as the beautiful Lake Natron. Lake Natron is not a game drive area, but there is more than enough to do and see and the area offers a very nice variety during your safari.

When you turn left from the village of Mto Wa Mbu, which is bordering Lake Manyara, you head to Lake Natron. You immediately imagine yourself in another world. Here you drive into the real maasai habitat, through a beautiful landscape where you pass one maasai boma after the other. With the majestic Rift Valley wall in the background. The Rift Valley was formed by violent subterranean forces that tore apart the earth’s crust. The Great Rift Valley has a total length of 7,000 kilometers from Lebanon to Mozambique. When you drive along this huge rocky mountain wall, you can only marvel at the power of mother nature on display here.

Dry plains with green oases

As you drive on, leaving civilization further and further behind, the mountain landscape so recognizable for the area around Lake Natron. While the Rift Valley wall continues to follow you on the left, one freestanding mountain after the other appears on the right. You drive through a desolate landscape that mainly consists of dry plains and here and there a green oasis. The first giraffes and zebras show, along with the countless Maasai and their herds of cows and goats. You can have nothing more than respect for the Maasai people who live in this solitary area, far from civilization. A world without social media and fully planned agendas. You feel the serenity while enjoying the beautiful view that passes by.

The mountain of God

Soon the top of the Oldonyonlengai is showing itself. According to the maasai ’the mountain of God’, a still active volcano. As you drive around the volcano, you drive through the dark gray dust of the lava flows from the volcano eruptions years ago. You continue on the stone road (the African massage is free according to the guide :-) and you eventually arrive at Lake Natron. The shores of the lake are shorter than they used to be because of the drought, but it’s still an impressive mineral-rich soda lake and also a breeding ground for hundreds of thousands of flamingos.

Activities

At Lake Natron you can undertake various activities such as a hike to the waterfalls or a walk to the lake. Accompanied by a local maasai guide who grew up in this area and can tell you a lot about the animals, the maasai and the landscape. On the way to the lake, the zebras are grazing a stone’s throw away and you are accompanied by the sound of cow bells of the Maasai herds.

At the end of the day you can take a dip in the swimming pool of Africa Safari Lake Natron lodge. From the pool or from the restaurant you can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake and the ‘mountain of God’ before the sun goes down and you day comes to an end.
